Her executions of Protestants caused her opponents to give her the sobriquet "Bloody Mary".She was the only child of Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon who survived to adulthood. Her younger half-brother Edward VI (son of Henry and Jane Seymour) succeeded their father in 1547. When Edward became mortally ill in 1553, he attempted to remove Mary from the line of succession because of religious differences. On his death their first cousin once removed, Lady Jane Grey, was initially proclaimed queen. Mary assembled a force in East Anglia and successfully deposed Jane, who was ultimately beheaded. In 1554, Mary married Philip of Spain, becoming queen consort of Habsburg Spain on his accession in 1556.As the fourth crowned monarch of the Tudor dynasty, Mary is remembered for her restoration of Roman Catholicism after the short-lived Protestant reign of her half-brother. During her five-year reign, she had over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake in the Marian persecutions. Her re-establishment of Roman Catholicism was reversed after her death in 1558 by her younger half-sister and successor Elizabeth I, daughter of Henry and Anne Boleyn.

A native of Lorraine, she was a member of the powerful House of Guise, which played a prominent role in 16th-century French politics. Her main goal was a close alliance between the powerful French Catholic nation and small Scotland, which she wanted to be Catholic and independent of England. She failed and at her death the Protestants took control of Scotland. In evaluating her life, historian Rosalind K. Marshall says:"Sacrificing her own comfort, interests, and ultimately her life, Mary of Guise had fought a long, desperate, and, in the end, hopeless struggle to preserve Scotland as a pro-French, Roman Catholic nation for her daughter....Charming, highly intelligent, and hard-working, with a diplomatic manner and an ability to fight on regardless of hostility, disappointment, and ill health, Mary was never merely a pawn of the French king."

He played a major role in King Richard III's rise and fall.He is also one of the primary suspects in the disappearance (and presumed murder) of the Princes in the Tower. Buckingham was related to the royal family of England in many different ways, but his connections were all through daughters of younger sons. His chances of inheriting the throne would have seemed remote, but he played the role of a 'kingmaker' for Richard III and, unsuccessfully, for Henry VII.

1492 – Peace of Etaples between Henry VII and Charles VIII.

    Today in Tudor History...

The Peace of Etaples was signed in Étaples (northern France) between the kings Charles VIII Valois of France and Henry VII Tudor of England on 3 November 1492.The treaty served to end an English invasion of France launched in order to stop France's support for the pretender Perkin Warbeck. By this treaty, France agreed to expel Warbeck and pay England an indemnity of £159,000. The treaty was ratified in December. The terms of the treaty included the English accepting French control of Brittany, the French withdrawing their support for Warbeck and a war indemnity of 742,000 crowns, payable at 50,000 crowns per annum. This increased Henry VII's income by at least half. The treaty could be interpreted as a spectacular success, an English military incursion had forced the French to sue for peace, presenting it as 'the English are great again'. French abandonment of support for Warbeck removed one of Henry VII's key enemies. On the other hand, Henry VII had abandoned the Bretons and went back on the Treaty of Redon. However, this had already happened in 1491, and the benefits seemed to outweigh the costs. He did this whilst maintaining the Treaty of Medina del Campo (1489) with Spain. After 1492 a rapprochement between England and France occurred. This improvement continued until the end of Henry VII's reign.
